They say you never forget how to ride a bike, but after a few years off, I was starting to wonder! Recently, I decided it was time to test that theory. Spoiler alert: they were right—though it’s not as easy as I remember! Much like balancing a budget, getting back on two wheels is all about keeping your focus, staying steady, and pushing through those tough moments.

As a CFO, I’ve spent years navigating financial terrain—steering through mergers, acquisitions, and ever-changing market conditions. But now, I’m also navigating literal terrain on my bike. And you know what? The parallels between the two are pretty surprising. In both, you need to maintain balance, keep up the momentum, and sometimes coast when the opportunity arises. Oh, and let’s not forget the importance of a well-timed pit stop (both in finance and cycling).

I have to give credit where it’s due: my CFO partner, Betsy Bennett, is the real pro in this arena (she rode clear across IOWA). She’s a seasoned cyclist and somehow balances long rides with long strategy sessions like it’s no big deal. Her dedication to both riding and leadership has been an inspiration, and she’s been encouraging me to get back in the saddle (literally and figuratively). I may not be riding at her level just yet, but hey, I’m working on it!

Whether we’re talking about steering a business through financial challenges or figuring out how not to wobble on my bike, the same rules apply: balance, focus, and sometimes just enjoying the ride. Let’s connect—whether it’s to chat about business strategy, cycling tips, or how to make sure you don’t look like a CFO trying to ride a bike for the first time in years (trust me, it’s a sight to behold)!
